Introduction: What is Stomach Cancer?

The stomach is an integral part of the digestive system and is located on the left side of the abdomen. It is essentially a muscular bag comprising different types of cells. When cancer arises in any of these cells, it results in the stomach or gastric cancer. If not treated in time, stomach cancer can spread to other parts of the digestive system and nearby lymph nodes.

Though the exact causative factor of stomach cancer is unknown, the risk increases with age. More than half the people with stomach cancer are over 75 years. This cancer is also found to occur more commonly in men than women.

The type of stomach cancer depends upon the type of cell where cancer begins. Early-stage stomach cancer symptoms are similar to any other stomach condition. However, some symptoms that may indicate stomach cancer are heartburn that does not go away, unexpected weight loss and loss of appetite.

How Is Stomach Cancer Treated?

Stomach cancer is usually treatable, but treatment may become challenging in advanced stages. Your stomach cancer treatment will depend upon:

  • Type and stage of cancer
  • Location of the tumour in the stomach
  • The extent of the spread
  • Your age and overall health

Standard treatment options for stomach cancer are:

  • Surgery

Surgery for stomach cancer aims to remove as much cancer as possible. The type of surgery you require for this cancer depends on where it is in your stomach. In some stomach cancer cases, all or part of your stomach is removed. If the stomach cancer has metastasised or spread, surgery may be used to relieve symptoms or when the tumour is causing a blockage.

You might need chemotherapy before or after stomach cancer surgery. Chemotherapy is given before surgery to shrink the size of the tumour, making it easier to remove, and after surgery, to lower the risk of cancer recurrence. In some cases, chemotherapy may be combined with radiation therapy (called chemoradiation) and given after surgery as part of a clinical trial. Chemotherapy is the primary treatment for advanced-stage stomach cancer.

Radiotherapy is used to treat advanced-stage stomach cancer. External beam radiation therapy helps reduce symptoms of stomach cancer and prolongs life. It is rarely used in the early stages of the condition.

  • Targeted drug therapy

Targeted drug therapy uses drugs that target cancer cells and stop them from growing and multiplying. It is usually given with chemotherapy for advanced stomach cancer.
